June 2007

Friday, June 22, 2007 from 13:00, the Netage Group Inc. streamed a live broadcast of its 10th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders to shareholder avatars in Second Life; subsequently, a Business Presentation meeting was held and broadcast. This is, if not the first such General Meeting in Second Life, certainly one of the first. The presentation took place at the Netage Group premises in Second Life. Though questions and voting were not allowed during the meetings through Second Life, staff members from Netage were available on site to answer questions.

Netage Group Inc. is committed to exploration and exploitation of three dimension virtual spaces (3D internet, referred to as 3Di), and as such finds it appropriate to support businesses and ventures within that market (such as Linden Lab and Second Life) hence their interest in holding their General Meetings and Business Presentations there.

Here’s an article on a bit of interesting news for us all, disabled or not: The University College London, in collaboration with the Graz University of Technology in Austria are developing a new technology that allows people to drive their avatars by merely thinking about movement.

While this is geared toward helping those with movement disabilities such as paraplegics and sufferers of ataxia, how cool would it be to avoid the whole initial awkwardness of learning to move in SL (one of the greatest frustrations confronting potential residents) by just thinking about walking around? Clearly, mainstream adoption of this technology is years off, but it’s not too early to start brainstorming other uses of Thought-enabled Technology — I’m looking at you, QDot!

Has Coca-Cola given Second Life residents carte blanche to remix and profit from the world’s most recognizable and valuable brand?

With the registration of a couple of controversial Second Life residents, some are in a state of panic. Many feel that these individuals would hamper their convention experience. Another issue that has also cropped up is the entrance of “press” requesting permission to film. Due to these incidents, The Future United Group has decided to clarify their policies in a Community Standards Agreement.

By registering for SLCC, you would be agreeing to these policies. If you are already registered and feel that you cannot follow them, there is a limited time cancellation period that lasts until July 13th. They will cancel your registration and refund your money. Among the policies on their list are: not harassing other attendees, asking permission before taking photos or video, and not hogging the microphone during question and answer periods.

Are you registered for SLCC? Will you be cancelling or staying? If so, why?

Good morning. Sorry for the late notice, but we are going to begin a rolling restart at about 10:55am (PDT) this morning. This rolling restart is required to roll out some server-side fixes and tweaks. Abbreviated release notes are below. One exciting thing about these release notes is the number that correspond to issues in Public JIRA. Thanks to everyone who has helped identify (and even fix!) issues through this new tool.

These fixes and features require you to be running viewers 1.17.1 or later to take advantage of the updated functionality:
* VWR-796: llStopSound() not working
* SVC-21: Request for making identification of llOwnerSay messages possible
* VWR-1101: Active Gestures > New button doesn’t auto-open gesture * Estate owners can now postpone a rolling restart for an hour

General fixes:
* SVC-242: Copyable objects are not appearing in inventory after being taken, are remaining, invisible, in world
* SVC-52: UTF-8 characters read from notecards are lost
* SVC-248: Viewer crash: Server sends malformed DeRezAck Packet (see VWR-176)
* A few simulator crash fixes

[Update: Pushed the start time back to about 10:55am to allow time for an in-world warning to be sent to all regions.]

[Update: Added links to the issues in JIRA. The restart is now under way. Time to completion is probably 2 hours.]

[Update: The rolling restart is complete as of 1:30pm PDT]
